Monthly highlight: The Global Blood Safety Working Party

The aim of the Working Party is to foster and support global improvements in blood safety and availability.

One of the key elements of blood transfusion is the availability to safe blood. Globally, half of the annual blood donations are collected in high-income countries from various types of donors (voluntary unpaid, family/replacement and paid). Although, national blood supplies are mostly based on voluntary unpaid blood donations, 40 countries collect only <25% from voluntary unpaid blood donors.

The Working Party recently published two documents, the Recommendations on increasing availability of recovered plasma for fractionation and the Recommendations on local production of virus-inactivated cryoprecipitate. To access these documents, please log in first.
