Monthly Highlight: The Rare Donors Working Party
To enhance transfusion practice, ISBT operates 14 Working Parties, each with a focus on a specific discipline within Transfusion Medicine.
The Rare Donors Working Party was established to 'Enhance international collaboration to enable provision of rare blood to patients'.
A blood type is considered rare if only one person in a 1000 shares the same antigens. There are more than 200 minor blood groups and 600 known antigens, which is why it is sometimes challenging to find donors with the exact same blood type. It is therefore essential to have accurate international databases of rare blood donors.
The Rare Donors Working Party has international collaborations for the provision of rare blood and discusses the challenges related to finding and providing rare blood. They are an important resource for information regarding rare donor blood issues. Read more about them here.
