Umbilical cord blood as a source for red‐blood‐cell transfusion in neonatology

Every week of gestational age advance, Hb concentration increases by 0·21 g/dl, and haematocrit by 0·64%, with no significant difference between males and females.

These circumstances partly explain why preterm infants experience a more severe anaemia than term neonates. In addition, further than being more pronounced, the Hb decline in preterm infants occurs at an earlier postnatal age (namely around 4‐8 weeks).
