In Europe, since more than one decade we observe the effect of aging of the blood donor population and concomitantly lower rates of younger donor recruitment. After the COVID pandemic and the imposing restrictions, blood centers are having difficulties to reach similar levels of whole blood donors enrollment as before the pandemic. Blood centers need to find strategies to maximize their whole blood donation, such as:
- The use of automation – Dr. Perez used 25% less donor-derived Interim Platelet Unit (IPU) moving from 5 buffy Coats to 4- 5 IPU. Moreover: increased recovery of hemoglobin and with that less blood components rejected for not meeting minimal requirement.
- The development of an optimization algorithm that provides on a daily basis routine the optimal number of whole blood units needed for the production of platelet concentrates with the objective of maintaining an adequate stock, decreasing expiry rates or disruption of stock and at the same time increasing the volume of plasma collected that can be used for fractionation.
- The use of Pathogen Reduction Technology – shelf life of Platelet Concentrate extended to 7 days which contributed to decrease component expiry
- Freezing platelets as an alternative supply

Meet the speaker
Ana Isabel Pérez Aliaga
Dr. Ana Isabel is a specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy who has developed her entire career in the field of Hemotherapy, where she has been working for more than 22 years. She has also been responsible for Quality Management for 10 years.
Member of the European and the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy as well as Spanish Society of Blood Transfusion and Cell Therapy she implemented the automation of blood separation in 2013 and Mirasol in 2015.
Coordinator of the Spanish Group of processing and blood components production. She is collaborative teacher in the Faculty of Medicine of Zaragoza. She has imparted more than 20 courses about blood processing and security and 20 conferences about improving blood processing.
She has present many works about this subject in national and international congress as well as publications in the field of blood components production.
Furthermore she collaborates with the Faculty of Mathematics, as a result of which, an algorithm has been created that improves the production of blood components.
