Hemorrhage is a major cause of preventable death in trauma and cancer. Trauma induced coagulopathy and cancer-associated endotheliopathy remain major therapeutic challenges. Early, aggressive administration of blood-derived products with increased clotting profile potential has been proposed. A series of clinical trials testing the safety and/or efficacy of lyophilized plasma and platelet products have provided light on the future of alternative blood component therapies. A group of next-generation freeze-dried and spray-dried plasma products as well as lyophilized platelet products, in different stages of clinical development, offer long-term shelf-lives and significant logistical advantages in the treatment of patients in austere environments and/or underdeveloped healthcare regions. This presentation will provide a review of the information provided by the most recent clinical trials testing the safety and/or efficacy of lyophilized plasma or platelets.
